Street, Haenertsburg.
The Pennefather cottages are ideally placed to
explore the area. Close proximity to the Ebenezer
Dam.
A bit of History.
At the end of the main
road in Haenertsburg lies a unique complex
reminiscent of the mining era and the early
days of the area. The Pennefather, brainchild
of Linda Wilkinson consists of six elegant
cottages each with its own name and character.
Five
of the cottages
were each named
after prominent
people of the period
who took part in
shaping the history
of Haenertsburg.
The sixth cottage
was named after
Long Tom, the Boer
heavy artillery
piece that was
used near Haenertsburg
for the last time.
Linda was assisted
by Louis Changuion,
a local historian
who investigated
the authenticity
of The Pennefather
Mining Company
and the cottages
were styled on
the buildings
of that time.
At the entrance
to the cottages
is a plaque put
up by Haenertsburg
residents in
recognition of
Louis's great
contribution
to researching
the history of
Haenertsburg
and its surroundings
and for recording
it in print.
The new second-hand
book store at
the The Pennefather
complex keeps
a wide variety
of historical
books of which
one is Louis's
latest booklet
called 'There
is gold in them
thar hills' which
deals directly
with The Pennefather
Gold Mining Co.
Do yourself a
favour and visit
The Pennefather,
sleep over, read
the history and
understand where
the special people
of Haenertsburg
come from.
