Haenertsburg - Capital of the Land of the Silver Mist

Known as the capital of the 'Land of the Silver Mist', the Village of Haenertsburg in Magoebaskloof offers visitors to the area a wonderful selection of things to see and do.

Surrounded by the majestic Drakensberg and Wolkberg ranges, the quaint village delights visitors with stunning views, and rambling walks through grasslands and forests. During the year various festivals such as the Magoebaskloof / Haenertsburg Spring Festival, The Silvermist Holistic and Health Fair and the Kiwi Festival draws many visitors from all round to the area.

Louis Changuion Hiking Trail

This scenic trail starts in the village and winds it's way through 200 hectares of protected afro-montane grasslands with forest patches with wonderful views of the Wolkberg mountains.

Starting in Haenertsburg Village it winds it way up towards the hostoric cementary where walkers can pause awhile and admire the view.

The whole trail is 10 km long, but can be done in seperate parts depending on your fitness levels and time available. It is one of the most easily accessible pieces of this rare habitat left in this area. Birding on this trail can be very rewarding and you may find Wailing-, Lazy-, Croaking- Cloud- and Wind-snapping Cisticola, Grass Owl, White-necked Raven, Red-winged Francolin as well as Jackal Buzzard and Long-crested Eagle amongst others. Maps are availble in the Village at most of the shops.

Historical sites in Haenertsburg

War Memorial Haenertsburg:

On the Town Square of the village, on the corner of Kerk and Maré Streets, is the Haenertsburg War memorial and Long Tom Monument, commemorating the wars that the people of this area have been involved in, from the Magoeba War of 1894 - 1895 to the recent Border Wars. The monument also houses the remains of the last Long Tom that was destroyed near the village during the Anglo Boer War in 1899 - 1902.
