Your friendly and welcoming hosts, Frank and Lindsay Warne, retired from their respective careers in London in 2010 and emigrated from the UK, replacing a frenetic lifestyle with the peace, beauty and tranquillity of life overlooking Serala, the Iron Crown and other peaks in the Wolkberg above Magoebaskloof.
They purchased the land two years prior to moving and started building their dream home in April 2010, moving in during October of that year – quite an achievement considering the scale and finishes of the home!
From where it sits high up on a hill it offers breathtaking views which change constantly with the light. One can sit for hours watching the clouds move across the sky, highlighting now this feature of the view and now that. Or one can take some of the many beautiful walks through forests and past dams where the many wild flowers each in their season will enchant you. If you are lucky you will see crowned eagles, forest buzzards or fish eagles soaring on the thermals. And there is always the chance of a shy buck scampering away from you.
Serala Heights is a wonderful base from which to explore the attractions of the area by car or preferably 4x4 – the remote Dap Naude Dam, the magical Forest Drive down a valley of ancient afromontane woodland to where the Debegeni Falls flow across massive rockfaces. Imagine sitting down to sundowners knowing that earlier in the day you scaled the Iron Crown, highest peak in Limpopo, which you are now watching bathed in the late afternoon sunshine. (You can travel to within a short distance of the peak by vehicle.) Later after enjoying the luxurious en-suite bathroom, you lie back against the cushions and watch an African storm play out over the mountains... Location:-
Turn off the R71 near the bridge between the lakes at the entrance to Stanford Lake College. Immediately in front of their security booms turn right onto the road which leads through the College grounds and follow the road, always keeping to the right. Serala Heights is signposted and can be seen on the top of the hill. It is a five minute drive from the College, and ten minutes from the charming village of Haenertsburg where there are several shops and restaurants worth exploring – besides the cemetery with the best view in South Africa! The bustling town of Tzaneen is 30 minutes drive away in the opposite direction, down the dramatic Magoebaskloof Pass. The kruger Park lies little over an hour beyond Tzaneen.
Facilities:-
There is one luxurious and beautifully appointed double guest bedroom with private balcony, where guests can sit and soak up the panoramic view over a glass of wine or early morning coffee. Coffee and tea making facilities are provided, there is a TV and a full English breakfast is included. Dinner is available by prior arrangement.
You can be assured of a warm welcome from your hosts, and will enjoy staying in this relaxing haven, returning to the "real world”, with batteries fully re-charged.
