Rules of the Photography Competition.
-
Photographs need to have been taken 'On the Mountain', or within a radius of 50km of Haenertsburg. That means more or less that the photo was taken at a place on the large map found on the website. It need not be a current photograph.
-
All photographs must have been taken by the person entering. Adults may enter on behalf of children, but this and the age of the photographer needs to be specified
-
A maximum of three entries per person per competition. The organisers and judges reserve the right to select the entrant's best entry to display if the total number of entries becomes unmanageably large. Entries can not be changed or added to at a later stage.
-
Photos should be submitted in a format where the longest side is no more than 1025 pixels long. Post-processing is allowed; the final product is entirely at the discretion of the entrant.
-
Photographs plus a short text indicating WHERE exactly the photo was taken and any other relevant information the photographer wishes to share must be emailed to mountaingetaways1@gmail.com and clearly headed 'Competition'.
-
The opening date for every competition is the first of the month, and the closing date is the 10tht day of the month after the competition closes. The dating on the emails received will be the measure.
-
Note the theme for each competition
THEMES FOR THE COMPETITION:
APRIL: MY MOUNTAIN - to gather as many wide-ranging pics as possible, all we ask is a photo that to YOU symbolises 'The Mountain'
MAY: AUTUMN SPLENDOUR - the mountain is famous for its beautiful autumn colours, the result of warm sunny days and cold nights. Give us your take on it.
JUNE & JULY: MY MOUNTAIN - winter does not always provide ideal photo opportunities, and we had few entries in April; so here again is the opportunity to enter any photograph which for you captures what the beauty of 'the mountain' is all about. June and July have been combined into one competition.
AUGUST & SEPTEMBER: WHEN THE WORLD AWAKENS - spring is the most famous season on The Mountain. Give us your take on it.
OCTOBER & NOVEMBER: THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING - as life surges through plant, animal and human and fills the world with joy, The Mountain sings...
INTRODUCING THE GUEST JUDGE FOR THE AUGUST-SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER-NOVEMBER COMPETITIONS - PENNY CAROLAN
|
|
Penny Carolan was born and raised in
Pietermaritzburg. After travelling to the UK in 2001 she met her
husband-to-be. After having a son and a
daughter (now 5 and 4) she decided to open her own photography business in
London. She studied through world renowned
Photography Studio, Aspire, learning the ins and outs of running a successful
photography business. After 12
successful years in the UK they decided it was time for a change of lifestyle
for the children and made the big move back to South Africa, settling in
Haenertsburg where her husband Craig is a Deputy Head at Stanford Lake College. Penny has now opened her photography business once again where
she specialises in Wedding, Family Lifestyle Photography, Maternity &
Newborn Photography as well as running Photography courses for Beginners. |
MAY COMPETITION: INTRODUCING OUR GUEST JUDGE, ALMA WHITEHEAD
Alma Whitehead has lived in Polokwane most of her life and has been a professional photographer for several years. These days she spends most of her time on photography classes and workshops for beginners (see her website at http://www.learnphotography.
yolasite.com
and loves the 'flashbulb moment when photographers are born'. She describes herself as the privileged wife of Norman Whitehead whose encouragement and support has enabled her to devote herself full-time to photography. She has three children and recently became a proud grandmother. We first met Alma when she visited Sequoia Gardens in search of photo opportunities and it gives us great pleasure that with her love for autumn colour she will be judging this month's 'Autumn Splendour' theme! |
Alma loves 'finding the unusual in the everyday'.

APRIL COMPETITION: INTRODUCING OUR FIRST GUEST JUDGE: ANDREW MORGAN
They don't come more home-grown than this, even though Andrew is on holiday from Zanzibar where he is now based...
Andrew grew up on the mountain, where his dad manages the local saw-mill and his mother the local NGO, and his sister recently returned to introduce us to Pilates and Weight Watchers. Both Andrew and Nicky made their mark at Stanford Lake College. The Mountain KNOWS them. Take a look around Andrew's website at www.andrewmorganphotography.com and you will see: cool young photographers don't come with much wider experience than this!
We are very excited to have Andrew as our first guest judge, to judge the April competition, and look forward to his comments on the entries and his choice of winner.

"WHEN THE WORLD AWAKENS"
NAME OF ENTRANT:Tracey Leppan
PLACE TAKEN: Outside Sequoia Gardens on mobile, 23/9/12
TITLE: Take my breath away...
The morning was still and thickly shrouded in a cool mist. It seemed to embrace everthing and everyone in its path, as long lost lovers do. Our softly whispered words of wonderment hung on the air....The Azaelas floral display were spectacularly contrasted against the tall skeletal trunks of the pine forest just behind. These pines standing true and tall, groaning and whinging in the soft breeze that kissed the uppermost reaches, seemed to form a guard of honour. The carpet of fallen pine needles offering a soft landing for the fallen blooms. The colours were quite luminous and give silent promise of even more of Mother Natures splendour to be enjoyed when the world around awakens.
It simply took my breath away. |
