Agostino Rech
A visit to Agostino Rech at his workshop on this farm
takes one back to a time when creators of fine furniture took pride in their
work. The Rech family is well-known in the furniture world and Agostino comes
from a long line of cabinet makers dating back many centuries. After establishing
themselves as fine craftsmen in Italy, Agostino and his brother Atillio immigrated
to South Africa.
Here they soon acquired a reputation as leading craftsmen of fine antique reproductions
and their masterpieces grace the rooms and offices of international hotel groups,
financial institutions, private homes and foreign embassies.
Agostino bought his farm in the Magoebaskloof district in 1982 and moved here
in 2000. Here he established his workshop were he spends his days crafting beautiful
furniture as well as reproductions of antiques and collectibles. Not only does
he make them from scratch, but if you have a piece of fine furniture that has
been damaged or broken he will repair it and restore it to its original look.
After a devastating fire destroyed most of Magoebaskloof Hotel, Agostino was
called upon to make furniture for the pub and the bar counter and to make chairs,
tables, the mantelpiece and the other items. Visit the pub to view his work.
He is still actively involved in the factory based in Gauteng, but his real enjoyment
lies in creating unique and special pieces of furniture. He can be visited at
his factory on the farm in Magoebaskloof. Contact Iris on 083 458 2159. More
